I think that this quote means it's better to be by yourself than to be hanging out with the wrong crowd of people. I think it also means that if you're alone and not hanging out with the wrong crowd then you will most likely succeed in life. If you hang out with the wrong people then you will start doing bad thing in your life. For example: If i go hang out with the wrong people I'll start doing dumb and bad stuff.  Another example can be: If i stay home and do nothing, then that's better than hanging out with the wrong people.
